Culinary Crusades: The Potato Monster

Tuesday, September 6th, 2005

One of the feistiest beasts I’ve attempted to attack in the kitchen is the Potato. I just can’t seem to make potatoes. I’ve tried just about everything, baking, boiling, microwaving. They are usually not done enough or chewy. I’ve come close, but they weren’t quite what I was expecting. Yesterday, Alisse and I tried making potatoes along with grilled pork chops. The pork chops had a pretty good plum flavored sauce. We also made green beans, potatoes and bread. To help us eat all this food, Joanna and Josh came over. The potatoes, ended up being fine, but they took much longer then anticipated. In stead of 40 mins, they took more like 90 mins. We think it was because I used a glass baking dish instead of a metal pan. These potatoes were the small red ones, cut in 1/4s and tossed (toss! toss!) with olive oil and thyme. Because they took so much longer, we had to start eating before we they were done. (That’s another thing I need to work on — timing.) The bread we made got done way late. It ended up being more like dessert :). Anyway, it was a fun labor day forging ahead in the culinary crusades. Maybe next time I can master that elusive beast, the Potato.

Me, a Hoosier?

Saturday, September 3rd, 2005

I wouldn’t go that far, to call myself a Hoosier. I think you have to be born here in Indiana to really be a Hoosier. I did today get my new Indiana drivers license. Next up, car registration, title and plates. Which leads me to ask: Should I get the special Taylor plate or stick with the normal Indiana plate?

I other life news, Alisse is back at school, which means visiting is much closer. That’s really nice. It’s strange though, being back on campus and not a student, but it is nice to see everyone from school again.

Well, that’s about all the exciting news I have for now.
